The Women’s Health Initiative
The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) was established in September 2010 within the Division of Student Affairs after receiving a $100,000 a year for three years grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Women’s Health. The mission of the WHI is to promote health and wellness for women attending minority institutions. To achieve the mission the WHI focuses on three areas: overall women’s health, STI/HIV awareness and ending violence against women.
According to the Office on Women’s Health, “Minority women continue to fare worse than Caucasian women in terms of health status, rates of disability and mortality. Among all women, Hispanic/Latina women have the highest rates of cervical cancer and the second highest death rates from cervical cancer.” Through innovative programs, the WHI will create health education programs to increase awareness on overall women’s health, STI/HIV awareness and ending violence against women. Please check out the event calendar below to attend the next event.
The WHI committee is comprised of The Office of Student Life, College of Health Sciences and The Women’s Resource Center. If you would like more information regarding the grant or would like to volunteer, please call the Office of Student Life at 915-747-5648.
