Athena Matyear is an emerging student leader at The University of Texas at El Paso [UTEP] majoring in Organizational and Corporate Communications with a minor in Women’s Studies. As an intern at the Women’s Resource Center at UTEP, she creates and develops programs which help students gain knowledge, make the most of available resources, and acquire valuable life skills that will help them be successful. Athena is also working as a GrassRoots Organizing Weekend [GROW] trainer for the United States Student Association, which allows her to train students from universities all around the country on leadership and organizing. Athena’s passion for social justice and facilitating growth in others stems from the many years she spent as a student organizer in the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance [FMLA] to ensure its existence on UTEP’s campus. On her spare time Athena enjoys playing guitar, writing, and exploring new means of creativity and expression.
