Admission is free.  Community members are invited to attend. There will be a Spanish Translator and Sign Language Interpreters at the event.

Take Back the Night is a international program that speaks out against violence against women, men and children.  Listen to survivors’ story and join us for a special candle lit vigil as UTEP joins nine other universities across the nation in the Take Back the Night Foundation, “10 Points of Light” vigil at 8 p.m.

After the candlelight vigil join student organization FMLA (Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance) in an empowerment Open Mic Night featuring Slam Poet, Amalia Ortiz and the Somaya Bellydancers.

Other official 10 Points of Light to Take Back the Night locations are: Harvard University; Brown University, The Advocacy Center, New York; Rutgers University; Kent State University; North Dakota State College; University of Tampa (Fla.); University of Texas, El Paso; University of Kansas; and Lehman College, New York.

“Kiss Me Through the Cell” – Sexting 101

Thursday, April 1st, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Sexting is becoming a serious problem. This workshop will address the legal issues of Sexting and its relationship sexual violence and relationship violence. What may be fun and games at first can lead to serious consequences in the future. This event is sponsored by Sexual Trauma & Assault Response Services (STARS).

“Do YOU Know the Red Flags”

We will be investigating dating relationships, partying, consent, power and control. Know how to be aware of your environment and your lifestyle by knowing the red flags.

Fire & Ice – Literary Images of Violence – Women Empowered through Encouragement (WEE) Series

Join us in a literary event on violence. Students will read poems, stories, and books related to violence. Guest speaker Mariela Narvaez-Stewart, UTEP Alumni will read excerpts from books she has published. Students and faculty are invited to showcase literary or artistic work they have done related to violence.

“Day of Silence”

Wednesday, April 28th, 12:00 p.m.

The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. All organizations will remain silent during the morning till 12 p.m. when the silence will be broken. We ask that all organizations pass out flyers that say why we are silent and how they can participate in ending violence against the LGBT community. A LGBT club and organization fair will be hosted in the Union Plaza south from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.

“These Hands Don’t Hurt” – Sponsored by Alpha Kappa Lambda

Throughout the month of April, Alpha Kappa Lambda will promote awareness, via a “Promise Wall.” The Promise Wall is displayed prominently in high traffic areas on and off campus. Students, faculty, and members of the community are asked to add their “hand” to the Promise Wall for a contr ibution of $1 and promise that their hand will not be used to harm others.
