Orientation and Check-In
Welcome to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). We look forward to welcoming you in person when you visit us soon after you arrive at UTEP!
As prescribed by federal law, the OIP is required to maintain records on all international J-1 Exchange Visitors. After you arrive in campus, please contact our office to set up an appointment for check-in and orientation. During orientation, we will make copies of your passport and immigration documents, verify health insurance coverage, and obtain some personal and emergency contact information from you. You will also be provided with information designed to assist you to adapt to your new home in El Paso.
If you are coming from out of town, please plan to arrive in El Paso, Texas, at least two weeks before the start date on your DS-2019. It is generally better to arrive earlier so that you can get settled and rested before beginning your Exchange activities.
Helpful Information:
- You are allowed to enter the country on your visa up to 30 days prior to the program start date on your DS-2019.
- Once you enter the country, you have 15 days to report to our office.
- Please contact our office to set up an appointment for check-in and orientation.
- If your appointment is paid by UTEP, you will need to get a Social Security Card. This process usually takes about 10 days to complete and you cannot begin working until you have your Social Security Card. More information is given at the orientation.
Please bring the following items to your OIP check-in and orientation:
1). DS-2019, visa, passport, and I-94.
2). A U.S. Local Address; No P.O. Box is acceptable. (This information is crucial for your registration with the U.S. government)
3.) Emergency Contact Information (Name, email, phone number, full address, and relation to J-1 Exchange Visitor)
4). Original UTEP department appointment/offer letter.
5). Dependant information and official documents
6). Health Insurance confirmation coverage if you already have it.
